In 2009, MARTA was awarded a U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Transit Investment for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) grant of $10.8 million to produce a solar canopy at its Laredo Bus Facility. The solar canopy was designed to generate energy to reduce the cost of the bus lot’s operations; provide shade to reduce the cost of air conditioning; protect the buses from outside elements; and provide lighting at night. This case study, developed by the National Association of Regional Councils, provides an overview of how MARTA designed and completed this project, which had first year cost savings of over $78,000. This project serves as a replicable model for transit agencies nationwide. Click HERE to read the full case study.
