Burlington, VT – 100% Renewable Energy

NPR reports that the City of Burlington, Vermont (population 42,000), is now producing as much renewable energy — solar, wind and hydroelectric power — as it uses on an annual basis.  Ken Nolan who heads up the Burlington Electric Department believes that Burlington is the only state in the country that has achieved this goal, which is expected to save the city $20 million over the next two decades.  He explained that the decision to use renewable energy was an economic one, noting that the city’s financial analysis showed that this technology offered the cheapest long-term financial investment with the least amount of risk.  Among other renewable energy sources, the city maintains a vast solar field near its airport.
